Community Foundation Grey Bruce’s annual On The Road Again tour visited the Walkerton area, and made a stop at Bruce Grey Mentorship in Hanover. On The Road Again provides the opportunity for local non-profits and grantees to connect with the Community Foundation Grey Bruce team to share stories about projects and events that uplift their community.

Located in Hanover, Bruce Grey Mentorship operates out of a welcoming facility, nicknamed “The Clubhouse”. This space is used by youth to interact with each other, explore their creativity, learn skills and develop confidence under the guidance of mentors. Inside The Clubhouse, youth can play foosball, cook a meal, play games with fellow mentees or create art. This summer, our team came to see the progress of the front walk and yard refurbishment supported by a 2022 Capital Grant. This grant was possible thanks to the Eva Leflar Donor Advised Fund held by Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

With this refurbishment, Bruce Grey Mentorship addresses safety and accessibility issues in the youth center’s yard. “It was dangerous, broken and uneven”, says Greg Dow, Executive Director of the Hanover-based non-profit. Bruce Grey Mentorship often works with youth and mentors with disabilities and this project will allow more community members to feel safe and welcome at the facility.

“It’s a really important space for us”, added Dow. “It expands what we can do in our building. We have so many kids that are constantly asking ‘Can we go outside?’ It gives us a space to be outside at anytime and because its right here, we are able to be present in both spaces.”  The space is used by youth participating in activities such as basketball, campfires, art and gardening. Thank you to Bruce Grey Mentorship for your continued commitment to creating a safe and accessible environment for children and youth to realize their full potential.
