The Walkerton Clean Water Legacy Award is now open to local students pursuing careers in environmental science or clean water management. The successful applicant will receive $1,000 towards their studies at a recognized college or university, or at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre this year.

Students may apply online at https://www.communityfoundationgreybruce.com/students/applications/. The deadline is May 14, 2021.

“We are extremely pleased to be offering this award to local students passionate about environmental protection and clean water management,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “We are leaders in the field, with the Walkerton Clean Water Centre training thousands of operators right here in Brockton, and across the province. The successful applicant will help carry that torch for our community.”

The award was created last May to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Walkerton water tragedy. It honors those who suffered and supports the next generation of students embracing environmental stewardship and the protection of clean water. The scholarship is distributed from the earned income from an endowed fund held by Community Foundation Grey Bruce, a registered charity.

To date, over $18,600 has been invested in the fund. We are extremely grateful to our donors, which include:

  • Walkerton Clean Water Centre
  • Walkerton Rotary Club
  • Veolia Water Canada
  • Gary & Peggy Munro
  • Dan & Elizabeth Gieruszak

Brockton Council has also committed municipal funds to the legacy award.

“This fund has gotten off to a great start,” said Stuart Reid, Chief Executive of Community Foundation Grey Bruce, which has over $17-million in endowed funds that support education. “We are very happy to be able to support this initiative as part of our education grants for Grey Bruce students.”
