A lot of people have heard of the huge shopping days called Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  These are days that boost our economy through consumer spending.  Of course, a positive jolt to the economy benefits many, but, now, we have a day that is good for the community too.

GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been driven by individuals, charities, businesses and communities across Canada and in countries around the world. Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season. GivingTuesday, the global day of giving, takes place this year on November 28.

GivingTuesday, the global day of generosity, continues to gain traction across the country in its fourth year, with thousands of partner organizations and millions of Canadians expected to take part. Since 2013, GivingTuesday has united millions of Canadians to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live.

The impact of GivingTuesday goes well beyond charitable donations, inspiring giving in all its forms. From coast to coast to coast, people are embracing this day as an opportunity to raise money for local charities and non-profits, run food and clothing drives, give blood, encourage kindness, help a neighbour and celebrate generosity.

So far more than 5,400 Canadian charities, businesses and community groups have used GivingTuesday to rally generosity and help make the world a better place in countless ways. Around the globe people are participating in GivingTuesday activities in 71 countries including Australia, Brazil, Kenya, Slovenia, Tanzania, the UK and more.

Community Foundation Grey Bruce has determined that the single greatest local need is more support for all pillars of post-secondary education. The first goal of our multi-year Smart & Caring Initiative is to grow the endowed education fund by one million dollars to reach 1.75 million by the end of this year, creating new scholarships and awards for Grey Bruce students pursuing university, college, apprenticeship and workplace training programs. We are well on our way, but your GivingTuesday contribution will make a difference to a deserving student. Literacy and education enhances the quality of life throughout our region and are imperative to providing sustainable communities that can keep our youth living and working in Grey Bruce.
